Thank you for saving my day.
I couldn't get my macbook pro to restore from synology, even though my other macbook seemed to be able to restore with the migration assistant. I followed your instruction and it worked. However, the new catalina seemed to have change the sparsebundle extension to backupbundle. I needed to rename the file back to sparsebundle for the mount to work.

Hi Tim,
I experienced the same issue and just tested your method but when I try to select my backup and proceed I have an error message saying that my backup is already in use.
I am completely stuck with no solution. Help would be appreciated !

Hi tim,

I came across your post tonight as I didn't manage to restore a TimeMachine backup from one Mac to another - which worked several times before.

Actually your workaround didn't work for me. I was able to mount the Synology, but the backup didn't appear. Then I checked again my preferences in the Synology and recognized that Bonjour Time Machine Broadcast was not activated. Immediately when I activated it all 3 Time Machine backups appeared.

I'm not a Mac specialist, so I can't say what the reason is. But this might help the one or the other!

Apple provides a login button to a Synology Diskstation if the computer is not connected via ethernet, but via WiFi. Nevertheless connecting via ethernet restores the backup in half the time!

This is an older but still very useful post. Thanks! Anyone have any luck with automatically generating a title for the huffduffed file? Even if it was just the same as the title being huffduffed, save the extension?

Also, any way to get Huffduffer to act on more than one file at a time? I often have a few that I want to add out of the same folder.

Thanks for this post! I'm upgrading my MBP with a larger SSD and it never occurred to me that Recovery Mode wouldn't be able to find my Synology backup. Your instructions were perfectly accurate. Saved me a LOT of stress. Thanks again.

Hi Hi

I had to wipe out my SSD because of errors and was able to do a clean install. My backup is on my synology drive and I would like to use migration to restore my apps and settings.

My question is if I mount the backup as in this document through terminal would migration find the drive and be able to access my backup or does this just work while in recovery

Thanks for this post. I've been wondering how I would handle a failure when using NAS as TM. My understanding is TM is switching from afp: to smb: Hope a simple substitution (mount -t smb) works the same way.

Yes! A failed High Sierra install led me here. Thanks to you, only an hour later I am doing a full restore. I just hope that Time machine estimate of 208 hours and 52 minutes is incorrect. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Trying to recover Time Machine backup from Synology onto external disk for macbook pro as the internal hard disk has given up.

I’ve got 2 factor sign on on my synology to mount the synology using the commands do i need the one off password. Having no luck using the above
